Job #3 TJ

Job #3

Ambrose Bierce- Realism: contrast
  1. Wants to show life accurately and simply without adding in unnecessary things
  2. Gives details that matter in life and what usually happens in most cases

Washington Irving- Romantic: Contrast
  1. Shows you what you want to see and what life would be like if perfect
  2. Gives you an idea of what your life would be like if you could dream part of it out

 Ambrose Bierce-Compare:
  1. He likes to make points using what's available and real

Washington Irving-Compare:
  1. Also makes points but sometimes adds unnecessary items or thoughts

The importance of the stories are that they keep people interacted with with the story line. I did nit like the story's because they where to unrealistic when Farquhar did not get shoot when he was trying to get away from the solders on the bridge. I liked the short story better then Sleepy Hollow because at the end of the story it didn't do that good in raping up the story.

JOB #1

"Death is a dignitary who when he comes announced is to be received with formal manifestations of respect, even by those most familiar with him."
(1.2)
  1. It is the job of soldiers to kill, and the soldiers in Bierce's story are no strangers to death. Through personification, the narrator makes death another character in the story. Though the soldiers have witnessed death numerous times, their interaction with the "dignitary" death is uniquely solemn and formal. I like this passage because it tells use that death is very dignifying and you should respect the people who are dead or are going to die even if you do not like the person or what the person stands four.
